Purchasing classics there

When thinking of food service, what link do you make with the Opel Olympia Van? A look at the advertising that adorns the immaculate Opel Olympia Van quickly makes it clear that there is more to this vehicle. The website of Koninklijke Ruig offers a wealth of information about the company, but as enthusiasts of classic cars and vintage cars, we are particularly interested in the automotive history of this prominent company.

Quality transport over the years

Quality in business operations and transport go hand in hand. The foundation for the company was already laid in 1886 by Pieter Ruig, with transport then probably going by horse and carriage. Due to increasing prosperity, the company experienced growth, and photos of a stylish small van with registration G 1935 appeared as early as 72897. 1968 marked a significant expansion of transport with the introduction of new Mercedes vans, which were synonymous with reliability – just like Rug.

The legendary Opel Olympia Van

As prosperity increased and the demand for poultry rose, Ruig settled in Amsterdam. The Opel Olympias are notable items in their company history. For Jan Ruig, the classic Opel Olympia Van (NF-88-71) is more than just a vehicle; it is a symbol of nostalgia. It reminds of times gone by and is of paramount importance to him.

A living legend

Jan says: “It is a privilege to present the Opel Olympia Van at events. This car keeps our company's rich automotive history alive. Back in the 50s, the Opel Olympia was known as a modern, comfortable and above all economical van. It was the first car to be produced on such a large scale and became a great sales success. The Van version remains a unique symbol for us, with which we can express our passion for cars.”

Choice for the Opel Rekord Vans

For lighter transport, Ruig later also opted for the reliable Opel Rekord in delivery version. Ruig has always emphasized a personal relationship with both customers and suppliers. We came across the beautifully maintained Opel Olympia Van at the Truck Festival in Stroe. In your opinion, does this iconic car also deserve all the admiration?

  1. I am happy that my father's Opel has ended up in good condition after years of use for both business and private purposes and then being restored together with him.
I can still fondly remember that I learned to drive in this car at an early age.

  2. Bakker de Vries in Uithuizermeeden bought such an Opel Olympia Van from my father around 1953, in the same red colour.
Delivered bread with it for years
    Reliable solid Opel quality

  3. A nice combination of someone who combines love for their own company history with love for oldtimers.
This model was unknown to me, do you have any idea how many copies still exist?
I myself have a Peugeot 203 station, but the Opel seems a lot bigger to me.
