You hear the wailing sirens coming from afar, and as soon as the driver sees the blue flashing lights, he makes way. Hurry is required; countless rides are aimed at saving lives. This task will be familiar to many, but the history of this ambulance is very special.

Development in patient transport

The Volkswagen, converted into an ambulance, is a wonderful example of the development of patient transport. In the 1960s, the first ambulances on van chassis appeared on the road, offering considerably more space. The VW Transporter was a particularly popular ambulance (and still is!). They were delivered new from the factory, while body shops often converted them for their new function.

Quickly to the hospital?

In the past, in the event of an accident or illness, the ambulance was used to take patients to the hospital for treatment as quickly as possible. One had to limit oneself to simple medical interventions; further care took place in the hospital. Today, the traditional white ambulance has been replaced by the bright yellow, mobile mini-hospitals that stabilize and treat the patient on site before transporting them to the hospital.

Delivered new in Italy

We go back to the purchase of this Volkswagen, which after the conversion was used for a hospital in Bologna, Italy. After a few years, the emergency vehicle was used by a hospital in Rome. The engine has a power of 49 hp (1,6 liters) and the transmission is automatic. When sold in 2017, the VW bus was kept completely original; all attributes such as bandages, oxygen and cardiac monitoring equipment remained intact. This alone makes the bus unique, especially when you look at the mileage: 14.000 km!

Master Chef, Master Pastry Chef Rudolph van Veen

A true VW enthusiast has often seen Rudolph van Veen driving this bus for his TV programs. He was behind the digital channel that is completely dedicated to food and cooking. The bus remained intact as an ambulance, but was used for trips to trade fairs and as an eye-catcher on stands with delicious snacks and recipes. Every ride was an experience in a technically perfectly maintained Volkswagen bus! After its working life, the VW bus is now back on the market, not looking for patients or cooking enthusiasts, but for a new owner who will take good care of the car for many years to come.

  1. In the 60s to the 90s I lived almost next to the Marine Hospital in Overveen.
This military hospital had its own ambulance.
They were brown-green with a KM license plate.
For a long time they drove a Ford Taunus Transit van.
Have had them for years. Later this hospital owned the famous Peugeot J7. Was a big improvement. Both in power and suspension comfort.
Everything disappeared. Actually quite a shame.
Fortunately, we can still enjoy the above-mentioned Volkswagen bus.
And nice that someone managed to save it with love!
