The BMW R45, finally recognition
And then there was the popular 27 horsepower insurance class in Germany. BMW could of course have used a tuned R 60 / 7. But the looks of that were too old-fashioned compared to the Japanese competition to appeal to the intended youthful target group. And he would be too expensive for the target group. The motorcycle world was buzzing with rumors, but BMW had a number of self-imposed restrictions.
The decisive factor was probably that the Germans could not say goodbye to the cardan drive, making a longitudinally placed engine a must. An air-cooled V-twin would look too much like a Moto Guzzi, while a liquid-cooled V-twin would be scornfully dismissed as a Honda CX 500 clone.
It was finally decided to simply make an air-cooled boxer block for the newcomers. And as a motorcycle for the youth, the machine had to be affordable, but with the same solidity that the brand was used to. Then so 'der Vati' also have peace with it. The first did not work ...
Blauwtje
Maurice Hünen is a man with a practical, analytical mind. Years ago it turned out that when he thought that his very cheaply purchased (pinched 27 hp version) BMW R45 did not have enough power.
Maurice has been working on 'Blauwtje' since that time
The machine got R65 cylinders, now 32 mm Bing carburettors, an intake set from an R100, twin spark ignition, the final drive from an R100. Because the odometer is on the box, and not on the final transmission, the counter indication was of course no longer correct. The bicycle dealer offered a solution with an electronic counter. The smart sensor in the front wheel and the display in the cockpit. Wonderfully accurate (also easy against fines ... ..)
Because that gem is not readable in the evening, a light is aimed at it. A lens fixture with a white LED. Only 10mA are sufficient to illuminate the new speedometer extremely effectively. And….it doesn't vibrate! The channels in the BMW R45 heads have been modified, the compression and ignition curve have been changed. And much more has been done in the meantime. Also on the bicycle part.
The basis of Maurice's activities is 'optimization'
Oh yes: he has no millions to fight against. Currently, Maurice is not afraid of anyone in the winding South Limburg.

And - certainly in BMW circles - it is a common understanding that classics must be original. We welcome this approach with extreme rarities and unique items. But in the meantime, Tritons and Tribsas are also closed to many classic hearts. So the soup is not always eaten as hot as it is served. Although: We sometimes frown when we see what is currently being put on the wheels of café racers and scramblers. Not to mention the technical implementation of such things.
But we have full respect for such a motorcycle as Blauwtje (and his owner). In fact, while maintaining a great deal of authenticity, Maurice made a BMW R45 that is better than a two-valve boxer ever was.
And that he just made a civilized-looking (That's how it should be. Because: BMW) classic motorcycle that trundles faster through the Limburg hills than many a 150+ HP supersport bike? That he did this on a very tight budget and with a lot of his own work? As fans of classic motorcycles, we can only be very happy about that.
