Purchasing classics there

BMW was once a somewhat conservative brand of German class cars. In a 1983 Yearbook, it was put this way: the conservative is in the years of producing a certain type with only minor improvements annually. For a reputable brand like BMW, that actually only has advantages. The trade-in value remains remarkably high and you don't drive that fast in an 'old type'. At Hofman in Leek we saw a nice BMW 320i from 1982.

The BMW 3 Series consists of cars that make greedy

The cars are from the generation of BMWs that made driving really fantastic. They were actually the smaller brothers of the 5 Series. The Dreiers came in various flavors: the 316, 318, 320 and 320i. All with gasoline engines. By 1977 the 323i was added and the four-cylinder 320i was replaced by the 320/6. Both the 320/6 and the 323i were six-cylinder engines. In 1980 the savings version was added, the 315.

The car that we found is a BMW 320i, a BMW of the second generation

In 1982 came the second generation, the E30. This version was immediately available as 2-door, 4-door and Baur TC. Initially the 'Boureihe' consisted of the 316, 318i, 320i, and 323i. Later the 323i was replaced by the 325i. In 1986 the program was completely refocused. There was a four-wheel drive variant (325iX), a sports version with a 2.3 liter 16V S14 engine (M3), of which a 1990cc version was also built for the Italian and Portuguese market (320is). Plus a very nice, real convertible version. In 1988 came the facelift and at the same time the Touring, a station wagon. In 1991 the last sedans of the band were running, and in 1994 the last Touring was made. The convertible had already been debited a year earlier.

The Dreiers were nicely fully equipped, but there was also a substantial choice of options. Including and five-bin and brown, heat-resistant glass. The 3 Series may have consisted of the smallest BMWs in the program, but in terms of sales, the successes were great. In terms of motorization it was possible to choose from 1600, 1800, 2000 or 2300 cc. The last two engines were the six-cylinder type that made BMW legendary.

Everything is finite

When such a Dreier ended up with his third owner after his first two owners, it was often the tipping point towards' cheap, dynamic car for 'young drivers'. That was the moment that maintenance became secondary to the purchase of a thick audio system and that the rust could seriously begin its devastating work. The fantastic engine blocks often began to show a distinctive blue by then, and aftermarket plastic spoilers and wheel arch extensions were fitted. Among which the rust also found a great breeding ground.

And then such a brave BMW died

But there are always exceptions that confirm the rule. And at Hofman in Leek, one of the 428 cars in stock was such an example. The BMW 320i from 1982 has a five-speed gearbox and there are 116D miles on the clock. It has an original Webasto sliding roof. He is also proof that you don't have to buy red cars if you live in a warm, very sunny climate. The paint is completely dead. This BMW is from California. Hence. But the interior is neat. It also has a lighter. And the things that a previous owner mounted to make this BMW 320i even more beautiful? They can come off.

BMW technically does its best to cherish the brand's history. The parts supply is fine. And the best reason to buy this BMW is that it is rock hard. Because he is worth saving.

  1. Hi. This car will not be from 1982. Earlier from the period 1974-1976. Then BMW had the 320i four-cylinder in the program. My second car was a 320 four-cylinder, the carburettor brother of this 320i.

  2. Dolf, the car in the picture is an E21. The E30 saw the light in 1983. I myself drove an 82'er 316 E21 for a few years. Just like the E30, still equipped with pendle axles. If the springs of it sagged a bit, the rear wheels got negative camber. It cost me quite a few tires due to uneven wear.
Many thanks for your pleasantly readable, educational, humorous and also philosophical stories.

  3. My (Californian) wife had exactly such an E21 in Hennarot between 1985 and 1996… with the original Bimmer spoke rims and 175/70 rubber. Five-speed gearbox, black cloth interior. Was super nice or the photos… exchanged for an E30 325i from 1985 (idd an early one) but that fast boy could not erase her memories of that red one. If she had kept it, it would have been Euro'd by me to narrow little bumpers and better headlights.
