Purchasing classics there

In the period of 7-11 June, 12 young Moldavians take a classic holiday on old motorbikes to all 4 regions of Moldova: the northernmost (Naslavcea), the southernmost (Giurgiulesti), the easternmost (Palanca) and the westernmost (Criva) points.

A tribute to the past

“This classic holiday will primarily be a test drive for our Ural sidecar motorcycles, which were part of the lives of our parents and grandparents long ago. it will also be a team building for our team and our community, an excellent source of photos and videos for the promotion of tourist destinations from all over the country and for foreigners, ”said Mihai Cecan, the creator of this project.

Because Moldova does not score very high on the wishlist of tourists.

The Republic of Moldova is a republic in Eastern Europe, mostly located between the rivers Prut and Dniester. The country is bordered on the west and south by Romania and on the north and east by Ukraine. The landscape is fairly flat and largely agricultural and wooded. Outside the cities, time often seems to have stood still. The capital is Chisinau (Romanian: Chișinău; Russian: Кишинёв, Kishinjov). And Russian and Romanian are the languages spoken in the country, where Russian is usually incomprehensible to us and Romanian sometimes sounds Italian / French to us. The country is one of the poorest countries in Europe. Moldova belonged to the Soviet Union until 1991. And when it left the Soviet Union, the Russians stopped buying agricultural goods as a sanction, giving the already poor economy another kick under the belt.

It is quiet there

In 2017, Moldova, which is somewhat smaller than the Netherlands, had less than 3.500 inhabitants. Of these, more than 000 live in a city and 1.400.000 people live in rural villages. That makes Moldova one of the least urbanized countries in Europe.

The population of Moldova has been falling since the fall of communism in the 90 years. Emigration of young adults abroad is the main cause of the population decline. The population decreased by more than one million in the 1990-2017 period (which is equivalent to a quarter of the total population).

Mihai tells

But there are still people, young people, who see their future in their homeland. Mihai Cecan is one of them. “We start this journey with 5 URALs and 12 participants. Our journey is 1500 km long with stops in places such as Soroca, Manuc Bey Castle, Pădurea Domnească, Purcari, Prutul de Jos, Orheiul Vechi and others, ”Mihai says. The start of the expedition “Moldova on 3 wheels” is scheduled for today, 09.00 am. To underline the importance of the trip, the start is from the Moldova tourist information center, Blvd. Stefan cel Mare 83. Hopefully this classic holiday will be the kick-off for more trips through Moldova, also for non-Moldavians.

Mihai can be approached about this through FB and his company Ural Tours. Oh yes: he also loves Vespa scooters and has already done a few performances for the local TV. So if you want to discover a new country on a classic motorcycle? Then a vacation to Moldova might be an idea.

Are more reasons needed to travel to Moldova? How about a friendly population, excellent cuisine and low prices?
