Vehicles and tough terrain, that has always been a challenging combination. And the worse the terrain, the greater the challenge.
In the terrain it is important to have as much traction as possible and also to be able to continue driving on soft surfaces or very soft surfaces.
With that idea in mind, William Albee came up with a kind of puppy paw for vehicles in 1955. The legs of a puppy are also not in proportion with the rest of his body, but that will work out well over time.
The idea of Albee was to give vehicles the largest possible footprint. That is why he came up with large, almost sausage-shaped tires.
And to make it extra festive, those tires were also pumped up very gently.
The result was a chassis that had a surprisingly low surface pressure per cm2 and the terrain unevenness followed so precisely that optimum grip was achieved. That approach also guaranteed only minimal load / damage to the soil structure.
The proud Albee showed that by being run over ...
In the meantime, his idea has been on the rise in the spring-melted areas of Canada and so on.
The tires are sold as "Terra Tire" at Goodyear.
But whether there are such flat feet in the Netherlands?
If you know you can say it.
