Purchasing classics there

In the world of classic cars, companies are essential that share a passion for technology and specialize in keeping these vehicles running through restoration, maintenance, and parts supply. To keep these gems technically on the road, the Voluntary Classic Inspection (VKI) has been started. This inspection, aimed at classic cars aged 50 and older that are exempt from the MOT requirement, is also offered at Garage de Basis, where Peter and Christina Commijs are in charge.

Active networks

Peter shares his love for special classics with his customers. Thanks to his networks, all kinds of unique cars find their way to his workshop, where almost every vehicle deserves attention. With older models it is often a complex puzzle to resolve technical defects. Companies with knowledge of old techniques are invaluable in this regard. Together with Marijke, the mechanic, the motto at Garage de Basis is: “Just do it!”

The Saab 96

In the garage we found a Saab 96 that had already undergone technical treatment, necessary due to a long period of standstill. The new owner, a retired general practitioner, had already been found. The Saab continues to winter in Leeuwarden due to limited space at the doctor's office. The GP deliberately chose a Saab 96 because of the beautiful model, no longer for patient visits, but for pleasant summer rides as a hobby.

Good taste

Peter emphasizes the unique character of the Saab: “Saab is distinguished by its power, comfort and extremely strong construction. It is a completely special car! Good taste and sportiness go together in style. Saab stands for quality, offers maximum safety and, importantly, a long service life.”

Saab 96. A selection of advertisements from years gone by

Advertisements from the past praised the Saab 96: “Before you decide to buy, drive a Saab.” The car was praised for its stability, light steering and overall quality. “The quality of the Swedish Saab becomes abundantly clear as soon as you see the car, drive it, and own it for a few years.”

The motivation

Customers of the classic car specialist appreciate Garage de Basis's approach. They take good care of their classic car and look for a partner for maintenance or overhaul who shares their passion. For them it is not just some metal and technology, but above all a lot of emotion. Peter's motivation echoes that of Saab itself; There was once a large sign in the factory that read: “Quality does not come from control...it must already be there before then!” This illustrates the deep-rooted commitment to quality and passion that exists among both Saab and classic car enthusiasts.

  1. I shared the Saab 96 story with the group “Saabforum.nl” on Facebook, with a link to the AMK article (see the attachment). I drive a slightly 'younger' Saab myself, namely a 900 classic Cabrio from 1992.

Saab 96 (1967). sleek beauty for peter.

  2. I miss a description that is more focused on the relevant technology. For example, I think I see the two-stroke engine, but there is no mention anywhere that soon - or even then - there would be a four-stroke engine that would replace the two-stroke. So how special or unique is this example? That can certainly be stated in two sentences. Purchasing classics through soul-stirring or otherwise emotionally-driven, I don't think that needs to be explained in detail to readers.

  3. I don't really understand why you would have a voluntary classic inspection carried out on a 50+ classic.
For the same effort and money you also have a full-fledged MOT for your 50+.
The latter is really an added value if you ever want to sell your car across the border, insurance companies also attach more value to the latter.
