What many people do not know is that decades ago in Sweden, just like in Great Britain, there was a left-hand drive ... On Sunday 3 September 1967, at exactly 05.00 hour in the morning, all motorists had to change their minds. That is, drive right.
Just like in the rest of the European mainland. The Swedish government had been busy preparing for years. At exactly 10 minutes before 5, all traffic throughout the country was stopped. At exactly 05.00 hours, road users had to drive their vehicle to the 'other' side and were then allowed to continue - right again. The maximum speed was set in the cities for a period of one month at 40 kilometers per hour; overtaking was forbidden during the first two 'right' weeks. The entire plan went smoothly. The first day only 11 people were injured in Stockholm. Those were mostly pedestrians who had looked the wrong way when crossing. That 'right-hand drive' was introduced in the early years of 1800 by Emperor Napoléon Bonaparte. At least in the area occupied by him. And that was great. Adolf Hitler did the same in 1938 and also in the German occupied territories. So also in Austria, because up to that point there was a left-hand drive.
