On July 2, 2022, the flag in Sint Nicolaasga will be proudly flying again. The local classic car show is back on the agenda. In the southwest of Friesland, the streets are full of visitors. They stroll along the annual market and also take in the colorful collection of heritage. The Oldtimershow fits in well with other events. And yet there is something beautiful that gives the event a special touch.
During the sunny morning, various owners come with classic cars, mopeds, motorcycles, tractors and trucks, and get a nice spot. Moreover, there is traditionally room for the necessary stationary engines. Further on, the annual fair attracts the necessary attention, it coincides nicely with the old-timer event. In short: there is a lot to enjoy during the show, which was organized in an excellent way by Bauke Bos and others. When you are there, you notice it immediately.
Enjoyment takes place in a completely unpolished atmosphere with and by people who are mainly themselves. The imaginary dress code consists of shorts, t-shirts and the occasional set of wooden clogs. You thrive in such an atmosphere, it fits perfectly with the character that the organization of the Oldtimershow in Sint Nicolaasga has given to the event since 2000.
The many visitors are rewarded for coming. There are real gems among the classics in Sint Nicolaasga. This is how it is feasted at the small NSU stand. There, a 1000, a TT and a 1200 (the latter is from Clarence Cnossen, a household name within the NSU world) are brotherly next to each other. NSU, it remains a beautiful brand, a beautiful concept from a distant past.
The Sloterwijk brothers are standing next to the NSU stand, with Audi's family members. That's no coincidence, because the brothers are quite active within the AACN. And above all, they are true fans of Audi and its rich history. The fully restored (and beautiful) 80 quattro by themselves and a jewel of an Audi 50 show off their feathers. The latter in particular attracts a lot of attention, according to the brothers.
A Trabant from 1964 shoots into the streets, there are beautiful Capris again. We see French heritage and some beautiful Benzen. A green 66 GL Combi, an Amazon and a 164 tell the passenger car story of Volvo in Saint Nyk† The regiment of Americans traditionally does not lie either. Mustangs, Firebirds, Camaros, a beauty of a Toronado, a Caprice Classic: the models mentioned are just a fragment of the collection of classic Americans in Sint Nicolaasga. And without doing the others short: the most special among them is the Chevrolet Corvair Monza 900 Wagon of Peter Visser.
Very cool is the beautiful VW 1300 Weltmeister, which was delivered new in the Netherlands in 1972 and one of the personal favorites during this Oldtimershow. Europe and America are therefore well represented in Sint Nicolaasga, but the Frisian village also welcomes two Corollas from the KE10 generation, for example. And really, you hardly see them in the daily traffic picture.
There is more, much more to see. What about the two Scanias and the classic Volvo trucks that grace the festival. And of the countless mopeds that visit the south of Friesland. Part of it comes directly from the Floralia in Bontebok, and there is also a nice regiment of Solexes to admire. Yes, the world of classic Kreidlers, Zündapps, Puchs and Solexen also flourishes in Sint Nicolaasga. You will also see various tractors from other times, and the field with the working stationary engines is very special.
This also includes the copies of organizer Bauke Bos, and the Frisian shows more classics in his home port. The 4 R1970, the Schlüter tractor and the Austin Devon, which has just been put in linseed oil and patinated, attract a lot of attention. Bauke's son is now working on his 1969 Opel Rekord C Caravan, the car is much older than the owner. The Opel came out without a properly working engine, but goes back in with a finely running power source.
People like it. In the meantime, the sellers in the stalls are making an excellent turnover. And the visitors are enjoying what is on offer under beautiful weather conditions. And of more things. During the Oldtimershow you can also eat an ice cream, get a cup of coffee or a beer, have a hot dog, replenish the man cave and expand the miniature collection. And those are always pleasant side effects, they are the extra pleasures during an event.
It is very nice that the organization has reserved a place of honor for the Ford Fairlane of Geert Doetjes from Leeuwarden, who passed away last year. The car was taken over by the niece of Doetjes and this year it is in the place where it has always been. Under the hood is a photo of the former owner, who was a participant from the very beginning in Sint Nicolaasga. The gesture is beautiful. The posthumous tribute is not an isolated incident, because Bauke Bos tells a few days after the Oldtimershow that the organization often does something special for people who are no longer there, but who have played a role for the Oldtimershow. This way no one forgets what the people have meant for the event. Moreover, it also offers comfort to the bereaved. Beautiful, and very valuable.
It is special, and tells us that an event sometimes goes further than simply enjoying classics. It is a very nice form of dwell on the past. A form of humanity too, which gives this Oldtimer show an even more special character. And puts any pretension into the shadows. On July 2, 2022 you will feel what that means in Sint Nicolaasga.
Thanks to Bauke Bos-Classic car show Sint Nicolaasga
The Citroën truck was not from Smederij Mous, which IS from Smederij Mous. I designed the letters in the most authentic style possible, and apparently it worked out nicely 🙂
Joop Mutters, what an inspiring story about this old-timer show. And I haven't mentioned the accompanying photos yet. Keep it up. Hope this year with or without my mine Triumph Vitesse Convertible to be able to visit such a show again.
Another nice article and nice photo report.
Very sorry I missed this event.
Great to see all that!!
Congratulations to the organization!
How nice that something like this is still possible, and that it all goes in good harmony.
I've had a Toronado like this for years, my Toro was from 1975. Big and clunky
but great for touring. My parents also enjoyed it.
Many very fond memories.
A nice article, I am often surprised by how many classics there are in the north
be of the country. Is it because there is still room there?
Thanks AMK. Greetings from YVR
It's great that these events are possible again, July 24 Joure combined with a balloon party. Will also enjoy again!
Great to read how you experienced our event. Does me good as an organizer!!!
