The beach buggy / funcar concept is something that car manufacturers polish up every now and then to show that they are lively & young. Think of the Mini Moke and the VW 181 (the 'Thing'). Those machines were not very successful in sales. They did get cult status.
Suzuki embraced the idea in 1991 at the Tokyo Motor Show. Their two-seater idea was based on the Suzuki Vitara and everyone forgot the model until after five years of consultation, the Japanese put it into production.
According to Japanese marketers, the X90 was the ideal, trendy vehicle for Californian sunbathers and surfers. A four-wheel drive two-seater with a removable glass roof and removable, plastic side panels, that should be it completely. An offroad with a funky cut appearance.
That was a miscalculation. In only three years, only 7246 were sold. The customers wanted either a tough 4WD or a sporty car. No mix of those two concepts.
The two-wheel drive version was mockingly served up as a 'women's hairdresser's car'. Here in Europe the X90 are really rare. And almost worth nothing. So there is no better investment.
