The third kind of screw heads: JIS

Purchasing classics there

According to the scholars Heren Woesthoff and Busweiler, there is too little tinkering in this country. Joost Woesthoff is named after his motorcycle salvage in Brummen. Richard Busweiler is Ural/Dnepr Guru.
Joost mainly sells many recent engine parts for body repairs and he now does this worldwide. Richard sells used Urals and Dneprs throughout civilized Europe. And for the people who don't dare, he now even supplies brand new Urals according to Euro 5 and a two-year warranty. But his impressive stock of used parts suffers from constipation.

So we still work

The two entrepreneurs view us, as the last generation of key workers, with mild compassion. And they charge us friendly prices. Because we still tinker or 'mess'.

And we do that 'tinkering' in our own garages, where most of us have already invested in a lift bridge. Because at a certain point you've had it with tinkering on the ground next to the motorcycle.

Of course we have the workshop manuals

But we often do tinkering with YouTube on the laptop next to the engine. With just a little search you'll find everything from videos about starting an unwilling BSA B33 to building a Honda CB750.

And that you need tools for that?

You can buy that in all kinds from our advertisers. That has proven to be a more pleasant process for us than buying through Ali. You now have all the special tools at your disposal with a mouse click. But with those simple things, with screwdrivers, things often go wrong.
That's because there's 1 flavor more than the fairly well-known Phillips and Pozidriv screwdrivers.

The types of star heads plus 1

Like being there:

Phillips screwdriver PH (cross head without further marking);
Pozidriv screwdriver PZ (cross head with extra star).
And then there are the JIS screwdrivers

JIS stands for Japanese Industrial Standard

The JIS standard for Phillips head screws has been in effect for 70 years and was discontinued in 2008. The only suitable replacement for JIS is JawsFit and the technical designation is P. Both the PH (Phillips) and PZ (Pozidriv) shape are not the same as JIS or JawsFit. Those JIS screws and bolts are found on almost all Japanese devices from +/- 1995. There is a JIS range of 7 sizes.

The norm in the sixties and seventies

Japanese motorcycles generally required much less tinkering than their British and Italian counterparts. But if you had to get to work, then the Japanese dredge cross-head bolts were a disaster. Especially if the Japanese four-cylinder that was attached to it was a bit older.

In fact, these often cursed star heads were often unjustly cursed in their day. As a last resort, they were usually permanently disassembled with a serious blow on a sturdy impact screwdriver

Look for the differences

The Philips and Pozidriv types are similar and are therefore regularly interchanged. Since the angle of the head is different and Pozidriv has four extra ribs, a good fit will only occur if the correct tool is used. When using the correct Pozidriv screwdriver bit or screwdriver, the screw will remain in the bit even when the screw is kept horizontal. And that also applies to JIS heads and the corresponding bits or screwdrivers.

The solution

At the time, the JIS phenomenon was kindly solved by the market. Complete sets with Allen screws were available for most known types. Beautiful. Effective. But not original.

JIS crossheads are different

A point of attention: Are the crossheads screwed up or still neat?

  1. If Joost still tinkers himself, he might be able to save up for an Aldi or Action or Lidl tool set. A folding set is only for when you are on the road in dire need?

  2. Yep, bought JIS screwdrivers (KTC: recommended) and they do indeed fit the Honda Phillips screw.
The Honda definitely got rid of it 🤨
on the Corvette no longer needed 😕
