Column - ABS, which is useful

Purchasing classics there

I drove quietly in the built-up area. On a priority road. From the left, I think a modern motorcycle came in a fast Tupperware outfit. We approached the intersection. He braked. And went on his record. I thought all modern-style motorcycles had ABS. That's the only electronic control cousin I'd like to have. But apparently this copy did not have such a nice feature. Or whatever.

Modern, sporty motorcycles nowadays easily have 150 hp and hang on their axles from the electronic measuring and control systems to control all that power. When someone proudly mentioned this, he got the sincere question from a Kawa Z900 pilot: "Why don't you just learn to ride a motorcycle?"

Anyway, the engine coming from the left smacked to the ground

Shuffled on. Came to a halt just before the intersection. I stopped and got off. You can do that with a classic sidecar combination without the thing falling over .. The fallen knight scrambled up and hopped to his fallen steed. He stopped and raised his hands to the sky. I asked what actually happened. “I saw you driving up. And braked. And then I fell. Look at this!" He pointed to his engine, which in the meantime marked his spot on the asphalt with petrol. "But why didn't you brake? “Asked the man in what I think was the most trendy outfit.

In my limited view he was really 'dressed 2 impress'. However, this approach did not really work in the current situation. I felt a little under-profiled. Because I decided not to fall that day before boarding, I wore jeans, a T-shirt and clogs. In 1997 clogs were recognized as safety footwear. Various clog makers could later also obtain the CE mark for their clogs. And if you have a classic heel / toe switch, you can switch with it very subtly. What clogs could do in conjunction with a quickshifter? No idea. My classic likes very quiet switching sequences. He tried unsuccessfully to get his engine back on the rubbers. Putting a fallen engine back on the wheels is a trick. He didn't master that trick. Or maybe it was the stress after the fall. I explained to him: “I was on a priority road and came from the right. Something about traffic rules and stuff. ” "But I've only had that bike for two days!" Well, the first scratch always hurts.

I put the bike upright

The owner repeated again that he only had the bike for two days. I asked him if he was insured all risk. "Of course not! Don't you know what it costs! ” I looked at the sliding damage. Scratches on the cockpit, the mirror and a broken flashing light. The brake pedal was bent. I know that such an impressive fairing sticker set can cost just 800 euros. In the meantime, the victim was phoning: “But then a motorcyclist arrived and I suddenly had to brake. And then I fell. Can you come here? ” I asked him if his hurt pride had an ABS. He did not know that.

The engine seemed to have a very drivable damage

It was not my problem. Neither did I feel compelled to complete a claim form. But that even high-quality plastic is very fragile? I should have had that nice again. And my ABS? There has never been a KMZ 750 cc side valve whose wheel blocked during braking. A little emergency stop on the pale blue tricycle therefore takes about five minutes. But again: you don't fall over with it. And it can withstand all seasons.

  1. With a small all-road motorcycle, as a starter, start and then start with "how should you steer / brake again?" try to answer the question on a few parking lots. When I could turn an eight in 250 parking spaces with the NX4 and dared to pull the front brake almost to blockages, my daughter continued to drive with the NX and because she also left home, I then bought the XJ900f. I've always been happy with the few lessons I had from a retired Marechaussee motorcycle instructor (mmoi scrabble word by the way) about 10 years earlier. These consisted almost exclusively of vehicle control and look, look, look and look. By the way, it also helps very well in improving your driving.
But I don't know if I can turn eight out of 1100 parking spaces with my current GL10. Brakes succeed a lot better after the overhaul 3 years ago, I am sure.

  2. Nice story, reminds me of the time when I made the roads unsafe with my Z1000.
Thing was old when this lady bought the thing for change, but driving was still good.
    Brakes?
Only needed really hard braking once.
Drove through the polder and ended up on a main road behind the bushes.
As usual, brake at the wall of the first house, and then quietly cross the junction, you have about 100 meters for that.
    10 meters, the road ...
Aaaaaaagggh, with 100 crossed ... (luckily nothing came, it was incalculable)
Two roads 500 meters apart and I was thoughtlessly turned into the wrong place where there were no 100 meter houses, but only one (1) house.

All this has come down softly.

  3. Although I can see the added value of ABS, none of my old iron two-wheelers have it.
And although I have once sat on my moped with a squeezed buttocks, I managed to get by with it without ABS… .nèt.
Of course, the back wheel of my old Hallie side-valve locks in damp weather when I just put my toe on the brake pedal, but I know what it does and how to react.
Anyone who is not tempted to buy a new toy every new season will often get to know the motorcycle; this rattle is normal, not that ...
Learn to ride a motorcycle and especially; teach your motorcycle to 'read', that already saves a lot of trouble
